FRONT ROW GOES OPERA 2012 FASHION SHOW

It was quite something ... a show like no other!

It all really is a bit of a blur ... nine months of rather intense organising, writing an insane amount of emails, having tons of meetings, fittings, uttering words of encouragement, issueing deadlines; people dropping out and new people joining in ... that's what FRONT ROW really is about and that's what makes it so exciting: anyone who wants to be involved will be given the opportunity, 100% homegrown talent with designers, creatives, hair and make up artists, models, volunteers, photographers, production team members and guests alike all pulling together their amazing talents, visions and their support to contribute to a show that has become one of the most glamorous community projects, dare I say, ever.

Every year I can hardly believe how the show has grown. It is an entity in itself, a living breathing thing that is more than the sum of the individual, truly magical, and I feel very fortunate to be there watching it all unfold.

FRONT ROW GOES OPERA 2012

This years event was showcasing 13 collections inspired by the Opera, Grand Gesture, Diva Stardom and Ballet on the background of some of the most beautiful pieces of classical music - with a twist.

FREYA VON STRAPP PAPER COUTURE @ PHOTOKINA COLOGNE 2012

I has been such a pleasure having been asked to work for Canon at the Photokina photographic exhibition in Cologne recently creating a PAPER COUTURE ballgown as one of the shooting subjects. I have to say that it's been the hardest and most elaborate design so far incorporating about 800 sheets of tissue paper in the colours fuchsia, salmon, bubblegum pink, orange and grey as well as brown packing paper, old music sheets and book pages I salvaged from the local Oxfam bookshop as well as back issues of the FT and old sewing patterns.

After hours and hours of careful preparation, this is what the dress looked like when I shipped the bits to Cologne ...

And after days and days of making & assembling, tweaking and colaging it finally looked like this:

Here it is in all it's glory ... this was quite an achievement for me colourwise as I usually prefer working in monochrome ... but creating this piece was a real pleasure, especially hiding little details like vintage keys on velvet ribbons, ...

... letters, numbers, scissors, butterflies, writ and even a camera in the folds of the petals.

A very beautiful thing in a sleek environment.

(and here is me on the right ...)

Vintage 2012 @ Wilderness Festival

This is a very exciting time as I'm packing all my vintage suitcases full of glitter and glue, tissue and tinsel, netting and feathers, stapelers, scissors, ribbons, vintage buttons and lots and lots of beautiful  paper to take with me to

 Freya von Strapp's
Paper Hat and Fascinator Workshop

which I will be running with my lovely team of creatives at the super-gorgeous

Here we hope you will be inspired by all decades of great millinery design to create your own fantastical head gear out of paper. No matter if you are mad about Jackie O's pillbox hat or dream about the Ascot scene in 'My Fair Lady', maybe you adore Marlene Dietrich's 30s feathered and veiled fancies or Doris Day's bucket hat, this workshop will provide expert stapling, paper, scissors, double-sided sticky and masking tape advise to make you look like a retro star.

Come along and find us in the Upcycling Area which will also be holding
a variety of other workshops across the weekend, from fashion to upcycling classes; turn old records into trendy clocks or cake stands, take a tapestry workshop, snazz up old china with transfers, renew old clothes by learning how to ‘make new and mend’ or even revamp old furniture.

The Festival will take place from 11th-12th August 2012 which is VERY soon, so if you haven't got your ticket yet book soon, put on your best vintage frocks and come on down because the music is fantastic.

PIPPI LONGSTOCKING - THE ORIGINAL IT GIRL

After my recent trip to Hamburg I found an old VHS tape of the original Pippi Langstrumpf films so I've decided it is time to dedicate this blog entry to her fantastic IT-ness ... that girl absolutely rocks the current trends:

Red plaits ...

Suspender tights (House of Holland) ....

... tabards (Chanel S/S2012)

...and black lace up brogues.

We hail Pippi for her Rock'n Roll lifestyle of wielding guns, lifting horses, taking the piss out of the law, spending serious money, fighting pirates, living the life and generally being totally un-PC - you have our unconditional love - forever!

(Inger Nilsson as Pippi Langstumpf in the 1960s films based on the books by Astrid Lindgren)
